Do you know what can create perfectly round and precise holes and openings in concrete, bricks, and rock? This can be done using only one machine: Concrete core drilling!

This masonry equivalent of a traditional hole saw is an extremely versatile and advanced tool used in electrical, plumbing, and HVAC installations. A coring drill can be operated by a professional with common sense, attention to detail, and some physical toughness. In this blog, we will discuss preparations and healthy practices for concrete coring. Let us get started now.

What does the preparation of the work area for concrete coring include?

Like any other construction task, it is important for both the client and the Concrete core drilling contractor to have clarity about the final outcome. If you are a client who is constructing a new building or renovating an old one, make sure you and your contractor are on the same page.

A core can be made in different ways: straight coring is used for drainage services; inverted coring is used to make a hole in the roof. Stitch coring is done to create a new doorway and for blasting. When you know what are your coring requirements, you know how to do it. The coring process demands attention; therefore, it requires the following preparations:

  • Make sure to remove all items from the coring site and clean it for better location access. This will help you focus completely on the drilling process.
  • Check for material that may be behind, inside, or around the concrete slab and locate it with a GPR device.
  • Have a GPR expert supervise and spot the coring location. They know better than to locate the right mark for the hole.
  • If you are going for floor wet drilling with a diamond core drill, make sure to alienate the area because slurry can damage materials and cause slips and falls.
  • Make sure to arrange a slurry collection method.
  • There should be plenty of light at the coring location, so arrange it beforehand.
  • Always have a spare PPE kit and wear one with full protection (gloves, eyeglasses, helmet, mask, etc.) when working on site.
  • When working on heights, have stable and sturdy stands to avoid the risk of falling.

How to do core drill Machine Preparation?

One of the most important parts of Concrete core drilling is equipment preparation. If your drill is serviced from time to time, there is no chance it will ever ditch you on the side.

Firstly, check the core drill bits to make sure they are not blunt. Secondly, install the machine securely on the wall or floor perpendicular to the core. Thirdly, arrange the right length of power cable and adequate water supply for wet coring. Lastly, run a trial coring to test whether the machine is working properly.

Rules to perform coring safely and efficiently:

When our workers start the coring, there are certain rules they follow. These rules are taught to them during the professional training. Let us share them here

  • Fit the drill to the parent material specially for vertical surfaces, inverted cores and odd angles. If the core is less than 65mm or under, the worker can do freehand coring.
  • Select the right concrete core drill speed to create a hole. Generally, a core drill has different speed controls: low, medium, and fast. To choose the right speed, follow the thumb rule: the larger the barrel, the lower the speed, and vice versa.
  • When coring, take breaks and let the equipment cool off before starting over. But make sure to withdraw the barrel from the concrete when it’s still spinning.
  • When the hole formation is over, turn off the power, shut down the water supply, and place the drill safely.

In the end: Remember that coring can be stopped any time a hidden utility hits or workers feel something is not in place. The best way to get precise coring services is to hire a reliable and licensed contractor with years of experience and professional staff by your side.
